The world of single-board computers

For years, I used Raspberry again and again for various projects or thin clients or retired industrial PC. Due to their low internal memory, thin clients were really useless in the direction of Linux servers.

These days I once got my hands on an Intel Up and I’m thrilled. In addition to comparable RaspberryPi, I also had BananaPi before, but the price of the RaspberryPi is really unbeatable.

However, one must not forget that the RaspberryPi also has disadvantages. For example, the service life and speed of the SD cards. This was significantly better in the compute modules with the eMMC memory.

There are also different approaches to compensate for this. For example, I installed the RaspiKey, among others, in my Y4RH (not another Raspberry handheld) y4rh.net.

These are all things I’m excited about at the Intel Up. AMD x64 similar design, fast memory. And above all an OpenGL capable graphics chipset.

Yes, I know Linux server and graphics, but at certain moments you are still happy when there is one. For example, in the automated recoding of videos.

Another very big advantage is the possibility to go to non-ARM based systems and to say I love ARM systems, my whole RaspberryPi and especially my M1 Pro. However, trying to get ROS2 (Humble) to run on a Pi cost me about 30 hours of my life before the task.
